Term Awards

Honours - The criteria are as follows:  an average of 80% or better in all 5 Core subjects with no mark in any class (core or other) lower than 70%.

Honours with Distinction - The criteria are as follows:  an average of 90% or better in all of their 5 Core subjects with no mark in any class (core or other) lower than 70%.

Christian Spirit Award (grade level) - This award is presented to the students in each grade who portray Christ through their daily actions and interactions with their peers and staff.

Band Award - The Most Improved Award is given each term to a student from each band who contributes positively to band class by coming prepared and demonstrating a friendly and helpful attitude. This student also works hard in and out of school to improve his or her playing. 

Athletic Awards

MVP (Most Valuable Player) - determined by the coach, a player that clearly and confidently was the outstanding player in their sport. Shows sportsmanship and leadership also factors.

MIP (Most Improved Player) - determined by the coach, a player that showed most improvement strategically, emotionally and/or physically (skills) in their sport.  Shows sportsmanship.

Coach's Award - player selected by coach that demonstrated and/or fostered leadership, sportsmanship and/or comradery (positive team spirit) amongst their teammates. Strong skills may also be a component.

Exemption Policy (Division Policy)

Rule for Exemption (Division Policy)

  • A recommendation for exemption from one final exam is based on a minimum of 80% average in each term in the core subject being exempted
  • Proper work habits must be demonstrated
  • Each student‚Äôs exemptions will be reviewed on an individual basis.
  • Exemptions are optional and must be approved by the principal, parent, and student. There are no recommendations at the Grade 6 or 9 level.

Exemption letters will be sent home at the end of the day on Monday, June 20 and returned the following day Tuesday, June 21 to the St. Francis of Assisi Middle School office. Parents are asked to call the attendance line the morning of the exam being exempt.  

Year End Awards

Subject Awards (grade level)
Core subject awards are given to those students who show exceptional achievement and leadership in the given curricular areas of Math, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies.

Christian Spirit Award (grade level)
This award is presented to the students in each grade who portray Christ through their daily actions and interactions with their peers and staff at St. Francis.

Overall Student (grade level)
This award is presented to the student who has best demonstrated a balance of academics, leadership and extracurricular activities throughout the school year.

Male/Female Athlete of the Year
This award is presented to the students who demonstrate exemplary team leadership skills along with strong athletic ability in a variety of sports throughout the year.

Physical Education Award (grade level)
This award is given to the students who demonstrate exceptional achievement and leadership in their daily physical education classes.
